Spring-cleaning: for some a chore for others pleasure. I found out about this ritual at an early age. Now, the idea of spring-cleaning stimulates precious memories.
When I was a young child, back in the land of 4 seasons and none of them the rain (Manitoba), the cold hindering days of winter season were ushered out with an annual farm ritual: spring-cleaning. No corner of our home was left unblemished by brooms, dusters, scrub brushes, rags and other cleaning weapons. Every inch of the closet was cleared, inventories taken, worth evaluated, surface areas were cleaned and cleaned, then those clothes that were still ‘good’ were organized in a helpful and practical way. Beds removed, dressers emptied, ceilings cleaned.
My memory of choice is the window cleaning. After windowpanes had been gotten rid of for cleansing, the windowsill became a place of pure euphoria! I can easily recall those minutes: sitting on my best perch, viewing the ice break up in the creek behind our house. Substantial pieces drifted by, splitting loudly, twisting, crunching, piling up in a disorderly pronouncement of the brand-new season’s arrival. Fresh air was in abundance; pussy willows to the left, bird feeders with chirping chickadees to the right. It was heavenly!
It was that type of day where I learned that hard work pays off. At that early age, I felt the change of energy in my house and myself after a day of general de-cluttering and cleaning.
The very best part of de-cluttering and arranging for me today is hearing my clients explain comparable sensations of lightness and flexibility after a session together. Whether in their office or home, de-cluttering can be a cathartic death of the old, the start an entire brand-new season in life.
What are your plans this spring? Is a cluttered space or desk stopping you from enjoying your office or home the way you ‘d like to enjoy it? Have your dust bunnies multiplied beyond an affordable limitation? Do you find spring-cleaning to be a difficult task of Olympian magnitude? Has it never even struck you that a great spring-cleaning would be appropriate at the workplace?
